You are a pitch of pure conscious energy, with unique resonant frequency (Spirit). Spirit is your true self. Your spirit needs a vessel(Body) to make necessary experiences to get evolved. It's needed for an indifferent pitch of energy to get evolved. You take many vessels to make different experiences. Your evolution can be done according to the level of consciousness you maintain while living.
What happens on the other side (A): When the trapped energy (Spirit), is released from the body, you call the process death. Actually speaking, you don't die, but your body does. Your existence after death is entirely dependent on your soul. The influence of soul on your spirit makes you a ghost for a while in the earthly sphere until you get your spirit awakened. Your presence as a ghost can be felt by the living, according to the intensity of the influence of soul. Normally, it happens to those souls who got killed, murdered or committed suicide in the middle of their lives on the Earth and their souls feel it difficult to get adjusted to the new bodiless (Spiritual) existence. What you wanted at the time of your death is marked in your soul. The influence of your soul makes your spirit more attached to the Earthly realm, even though you are a departed soul. It happens when you feel extreme level of attachment to someone or something at death or you keep grudge against someone at death. A ghost, in other words, is a spirit who has not been free from the influence of soul yet. The visibility or availability of a ghost is dependant on the intensity of its soul. Nothing is permanent in a simulated Universe and when the spirit is fully awakened a ghost gets itself free from the influence it had, from the soul, and gets ready to have the next avatar. It, sometimes, takes many human years for a spirit/ghost to get awakened. Roughly calculated, there's huge difference between the spiritual realm and earthly realm. Your one year is simply one day for the spirits, which is why it appears that 'haunting' lasts for many of your centuries. Most of your ghost sightings can be visionary illusion from the brain. Everything is recorded in the quantum field. The soul you made is your contribution to the field in terms of its further evolution. Your, wandering or liberated spirit or the soul you formed can be accessible to anyone, who's spiritually qualified. This is how the mediums among you work.
What happens on the other side (B): After death, some of you can be seen in the Early realm for a while as ghosts until your spirit gets awakened. Many of you reach the spiritual realm, where you plan your next avatar. Most of you get your spirit awakened, soon after your death. When the spirit is awakened you get totally free from the influence of your simulated existence. Now, your soul is just one piece of your experience from the previous birth and you don't have any influence from it. Now you start judging yourself and if you have caused higher entropy (Negative karma) to your previous system, being negatively polarized, as an awakened spirit, you find yourself remorseful that you misused your chance of evolution. Your spirit burns with regrets of having had such a life (Religions metaphorically call this state Hell). And volunteer to have repentance for the previous life, choosing another avatar in which you are ready to suffer more. You willingly become ready to correct the entropy. This is how some of you are born with fatal diseases, or deformities or disabilities. Sometimes it appears that you even become ready to be killed or murdered if you have done the same in your previous birth. If you are a positively polarized spirit who had a life focused on the service to others, your spirit gets easily awakened to get graduated into the higher densities of consciousness and it is in an ecstatic state that it can get graduated to higher level or continue to be a guiding spirit (Angel as you call them) for others. (The Religions have metaphorically described this state as Heaven) As an evolved spirit you can work from the Spiritual Sphere and on different Planets to get the less conscious evolved and guided.
How to be positively polarized: Have a regular 5- minute meditation in which you reaffirm that you are so powerful and you are everything and you are the part of the Universe. This is how you acquire the muscle memory about it always and use love as your tool to function. The practice of love helps you get evolved so fast.
